Mailbox Drama

For several months, my mailbox has stood in a bucket next to the road.  There it would remain forever, I supposed.  Oh, it wasn't nearly as neat and together as this mailbox.   It was propped up in a five gallon bucket that had been filled with a variety of rocks.  It dangled over the road in a cockeyed way, perched on the verge of a four foot ditch.  But where else could it go?  The only other place was either in the middle of the driveway or the middle of the road.  So there my sad little mailbox sat, day after day, always on the brink of extinction.

Why didn't I dig a hole and plant it in the ground like normal people do?  Well, a few months ago that's exactly how it was, even with the post hole filled with concrete.  The post was painted green, since I had some green paint, and the box was properly marked with the address, which I think may be a postal regulation.  There are lots of postal regulations though, and it's hard to tell what is a regulation, and what is just the usual way things are done.  One thing was certain.  My mailbox did not meet any codes or regulations known to man.  After the road was improved about six months ago, and the driveway improved, and a four foot ditch dug, I found my mailbox lying out in the driveway.  It was a wreck.  Well, from time to time the mailboxes around here take a hit, so deal with it.  It is highly illegal to destroy mailboxes.  This seems to make it more tempting to do.  But this time it seemed to be the victim of road work.

Eventually the mailbox found its way into a bucket of rocks next to the new ditch.   I would say it was a precarious setup, and I knew one day there would be more mailbox drama.  However, I was at a loss at what to do.  I am not a hole digger.  I just don't have the strength to plant mailboxes in the ground, so I thought I would have to hire it done.  Well, then what?  Pay $300 and one day see the mailbox lying out in the driveway again?   I decided I might as well just leave it propped up in a bucket of rocks.  So imagine my astonishment to check the mail today and find the mailbox planted into the ground next to the road!!!  The bucket of rocks had totally disappeared.  It probably was buried in the hole the mailbox post is in to help keep the lovely mailbox propped up.  Wild.  I asked David if he had done it.  He didn't know anything about it and supposed the road crew had made a special trip out here to fix the mailbox wreck.  This is doubtful since they would have fixed it back when they were actually here, and not made a special mission of mercy out here months later.  Did the post office fix it?  That is really unlikely.  Well, someone did it.  I'm very happy and grateful for that.

THANK YOU TO WHOEVER FIXED MY MAILBOX!!!
